Nutrition Status

Overweight children

As a form of malnutrition, overweight results from energy intakes from food and beverages that exceed children’s energy requirements. Overweight increases the risk of diet-related noncommunicable diseases later in life. The global nutrition target is not to increase the percentage of overweight children, compared to the 2012 reference value. This translates directly to the national level. A country with queal or lower values for overweight compared to 2012 is considered on track (green). Higher rates of overweight mean the country is off track. Different from the other nutrition indicators, the overweight target has only 'off track' category (orange).
